How Do the Attorney Fees Work?

Personal injury cases are pursued on a contingent fee basis.  What this means is that Altemus & Wagner will pursue recovery for your injuries with no up front payments out of your pocket.  We front all the costs and expenses related to your personal injury case.  This usually includes the cost of obtaining records, filing fees for court documents, deposition expenses, office expenses, fees for expert consultants, and the like.  Although we do not pay for your medical treatment up front, we can often assist you in locating a medical provider who will wait for payment until your claim is resolved.

Altemus & Wagner receives a percentage of the ultimate settlement or judgment known as a contingent fee.  In other words, the attorney’s fee is contingent on a settlement or judgment.  What this means is that we will fight for the best possible settlement or judgment for you.  This not only provides you a greater recovery, but it provides an incentive to the attorneys to maximize your recovery.

Some attorneys or law firms will entice you to let them handle your claim by charging a lower fee.  While there are exceptions to every rule, the adage “you get what you pay for” often applies equally in the legal field.  If you are considering an attorney or law firm that advertises a fee less than the industry standard, you might want to think twice.

If you prefer, we will also discuss with you the possibility of pursuing your case on an hourly fee basis. However, most people prefer the contingent fee.
